Gymnast Artem Dolgopyat wins floor exercise to give Israel its second Olympic gold to date


Artem Dolgopyat won Israel’s first-ever Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics. Dolgopyat won gold in the men’s floor exercise, edging Spaniard Rayderley Zapata in a tie-breaker.

Dolgopyat and Zapata both scored 14.933 in the event final. They both had matching execution scores during their routines. Dolgopyat won gold because his set was slightly more difficult than Zapata’s.

Xiao Ruoteng of China won the bronze medal for his third medal in Tokyo. Ruoteng won silver in the men’s all-around and bronze in the team event last week.

The gold medal is only second for Israel in any Olympic event. Gal Fridman won a gold medal in men’s windsurfing at the Athens Games in 2004.
