Joseph Murphy reports that Gustavus Weston is in great shape ahead of the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.
The five-year-old is already a winner of groups three and two, and performed respectably on his first try at the top level when he finished sixth on the romantic proposition in the Flying Five Stakes at Curragh on last month.
Murphy believes stepping back to six stadia on the fall floor will bring out the best in Gustavus Weston.
“He’s doing well. The pitch and distance should be fine for him. He’s in good shape. We’ve refreshed him for the race and I hope he can do himself justice,” said the County Tipperary coach. .
“Six stadiums is his perfect trip with a little juice in the ground.
“With Starman absent and some of the horses that raced in France don’t start, it looks like an open race. We expect him to have a good race.”
