Gunmen in southwestern Nigeria kill dozens at church service

Gunmen have killed dozens of worshipers, including children, in a shootout during a Sunday church service in southwestern Nigeria, the latest example of rising religious violence in Africa’s most populous country.

Government officials, law enforcement and witnesses said masked assailants entered a Pentecost service at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Ondo state, spraying bullets and detonating explosives. There was no official estimate of the death toll, but some local lawmakers said it could be over 50.
