A gunman shot three people, including two first responders, at the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo in Texas before being shot and wounded by sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

Just before 11 p.m. Monday, a man opened fire on Potter County deputies working off duty at the Amarillo Fair, Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas said.

Thomas said “the suspect opened fire on the deputies, hitting an off-duty deputy and firefighter, also working at the fair, and a passer-by”. The deputies returned fire, injuring the suspect.

A witness called the scene “pure chaos” to KFDA-TV.

The deputy, firefighter and bystander were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. The suspected shooter was taken to hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.

Thomas did not identify any of the victims or the suspect. He did not give a motive for the shooting, which is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

Amarillo is approximately 365 miles northwest of Dallas.

The Tri-State Fair will be closed until 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release.

“All normal hours of operation will resume at that time,” the announcement read. “Additional security measures will be in place at the gates and on the grounds. All through traffic must take place at gates 1 and 4.”

The fair kicked off on September 16 and is scheduled to run until September 24, according to its website.
