Gunman dies by suicide outside US Capitol after car crash, police say

A man was fatally shot outside the United States Capitol on Sunday morning after ramming his car into a barricade and opening fire as his car burst into flames, police said.

The unidentified man escaped from his burning vehicle and fired several shots into the air just after 4 a.m. as officers rushed to the scene on the east side of the Capitol, police said from the US Capitol in a statement.

Officers were approaching the man when he took his own life. No one else was injured, authorities said.

“At this time, it does not appear that the man was targeting members of Congress, who are on vacation, and it does not appear that any officers fired their weapons,” Capitol Police said.

Authorities said they are investigating the man’s background, with the DC Metropolitan Police Department handling the death investigation.
