Guillermo Del Toro “sobs like a baby” every time he watches his version of “Pinocchio”.

The Oscar-winning director is directing a new animated take on the classic story – which will feature the voices of Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett and Christoph Waltz – and he admits the personal passion project has left him very emotional.

Guillermo told Collider, “Obviously in animation you can see the movie in the storyboards that start ending multiple times and then you add the stop-motion. Right now we’re 50% animated. and 50% in storyboards.

“Every time I watch the movie, I sob like a baby.”

The film is slated for release in late 2022 and Guillermo says it’s unlike any other adaptation of the classic Italian tale.

The ‘Shape of Water’ director said, “This is unlike any version of the story you’ve ever seen. It’s completely different. It overturns the moral foundations of the original fable, that is, to be a real boy you’ve got to change. You’re gonna become flesh and blood. It’s about becoming a real boy by acting … by acting like a real human, period. “

Guillermo admitted that his new film – which he was directing alongside Mark Gustafson – was very “personal” as it drew parallels between “Pinocchio” and “Frankenstein”.

He explained: “It’s a very, very personal movie for me. The flip side for me (has) always been Pinocchio and Frankenstein, it’s the same story. Because basically it’s the same story.

“The idea of a Pinocchio talking about things that I consider to be very deep but it’s fun and it’s a musical at the same time, I find it really incredibly moving.”
