Indian boxing star MC Mary Kom has been forced to withdraw from the 2022 CWG selection trials after suffering a leg injury in her 48kg semi-final bout against boxer Nitu on Friday. The six-time world champion injured his knee a minute into the first round of the fight.
Even though Mary Kom returned to the ring, after getting medical assistance, the pain was too bad for her to continue. Eventually, Nitu qualified for the Trials Final. Meanwhile, the likes of Nikhat Zareen (50kg) and Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (70kg) also qualified for the finals in their respective categories.
Mary Kom is the most successful boxer at the world championships and in 20 years has won six gold medals, one silver and one bronze. Apart from that, she also has a Olympic Games bronze medal in his name as well. Prior to boxing trials for the CWG, she opted out of the recently held world championship to focus on the Birmingham Games.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games are scheduled for July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, UK. The Women’s Boxing National Selection Trials for the 2022 CWG will conclude on Saturday, from where the team for the event will also be announced.
