GOP senators push White House to stop border surge

Senate Republicans are calling on the White House to act to secure the U.S. southern border and want to work with Democrats to make policy changes.

Senate Republicans are calling on the White House to act to secure the U.S. southern border and want to work with Democrats to make policy changes.

The lawmakers’ call comes as the number of border crossings continues to rise.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say they expect migrant numbers to remain high until changes are made.

Border Patrol agents stopped nearly 9,000 people and apprehended nearly 7,500 last weekend alone.

Senators became emotional Wednesday during a press conference when talking about children injured by barbed wire. Young people are in debt to drug cartels and women are repeatedly raped in order to pay the cartels.

“Folks, this is out of control, we have to do something. We will not allow this to happen in a third world country, we certainly should not allow this to happen in the United States of America” , said Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL).

“You can’t see what’s happening and defend it,” said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

The Border Patrol says it has seized enough fentanyl to kill “the entire American population.”

This does not include the amount seized at ports of entry, officers say much more is caught there.

And they argue it highlights the danger of fentanyl getting past officers on the ground.
