GOP senator says Jan. 6 House panel should be questioned after recordings released

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) on Saturday called for an investigation into the House’s Jan. 6 committee after security footage from inside the Capitol was released, saying the committee selectively ignored the evidence.

“Why have Liz Cheney and Adam Kizinger never referenced any of these tapes?” Lee questioned theformerly Twitter, referring to a video showing police assisting rioters inside the Capitol on January 6.

Former Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) were the only Republican members of the committee.

“Maybe they never looked for them. Maybe they never even questioned their own narrative,” he continued. “Maybe they were just too busy selectively leaking text messages from the Republicans they wanted to defeat.”

On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) began releasing 40,000 hours of security camera footage of the Capitol riots.

“This decision will give millions of Americans, defendants, public interest organizations and the media the opportunity to see for themselves what happened that day, rather than having to rely “up to the interpretation of a small group of government officials,” Johnson said.

More than 1,100 people have been charged with crimes related to the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol and more than 400 with assaults on police officers, according to the Justice Department. Rioters caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage to the Capitol building, the Architect of the Capitol said.
