Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) praised a woman and left her a gift after pleading guilty earlier this year to storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Dr Simone Gold, an anti-vaccine lawyer who allegedly ignored police and gave a speech to other rioters on January 6, pleaded guilty in March to her role in the deadly attack.
Gold was sentenced to two months in prison, although she was released from a federal institution in Miami two weeks before the end of her sentence, according to MedPage Today.
Gold, who apparently lives in Florida and is not a member of the Gohmert Texas congressional district, tweeted Friday that she received a flag waving above the Capitolthe building she stormed on January 6.
Gohmert shared Gold’s tweet and called her “an american patriot and hero.”
In a Friday statement, Gohmert claimed Gold’s actions on Jan. 6 amounted to “entering peacefully” into the Capitol building. He said she was “the definition of what a political prisoner looks like”.
“God bless Dr. Gold,” Gohmert wrote on his website. “History will not look kindly on those who persecuted – and prosecuted – doctors who spoke out against COVID lockdowns, masks and vaccine mandates.”
Victor Ruiz, a former combat medic, tweeted that Gohmert’s presentation of the American flag to Gold was a moment that “ignited a fire in me.”
“Take an individual guilty of undermining democracy and give him the flag of the country he spits on? Louie Gohmert is a waste of oxygen,” Ruiz wrote.
Kurt Bardella, a Democratic strategist and former spokesman for the right-wing Breitbart News, tweeted that Gohmert’s flag donation amounted to “rewarding a domestic terrorist” and called for Gohmert’s expulsion from Congress.
Gold is set for a year of supervised release and is ordered to pay $10,000 for damage to the Capitol building, MedPage Today reported.
