GOP abortion bans are ‘cynical, preposterous, lacking in compassion’

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA) said Thursday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that Republican-led state legislatures banning abortion were “cynical, preposterous, lacking in compassion.”

Anchor Nicolle Wallace said, “As the United States Supreme Court looks poised to overturn Roe v. Wade as early as next month, Republican state lawmakers are racing to pass abortion bans. And these prohibitions are becoming more and more extreme. Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban. It contains a chilling requirement that all abortions must be reported to the state with the reason they were performed, all of them.

She added: “None of these prohibitions have exceptions for rape or incest, not one.”

Dean said: “These are grotesque additions to what happened with the Texas law that we saw months ago. Ban abortion after six weeks and of course in anticipation of what the Supreme Court might do as they allow the Texas ban to go ahead as they decide whether or not to overturn Roe v. Wade.

She continued, “What I think is so farcical is these decisions, obviously made by Republican-controlled majorities and Republican governors. I could note how overwhelmingly male people are passing these laws because I am a former member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature who experienced the introduction of these bills. They have nothing to do with health care. They have nothing to do with laws or the constitutional right to abortion, to abortion services because abortion services are health care services. These are cynical, preposterous political gestures, lacking in compassion and understanding of what abortion services are, from governors and legislators. Unfortunately, Republican majorities in my own state have tried these same things. I know that following this decision of the Supreme Court, I will try again if they remain in the majority.
