Google Chrome Web Store is getting an overhaul
The Chrome Web Store is a great place to find extensions, but it’s also a part of the world’s most popular browser that’s easy to forget. But now Google has launched a completely redesigned Chrome Web Store.
Updated 11/20: Google has officially launched the new Chrome Web Store, with the redesign having now completely replaced the original look and feel for all users. The radical redesign also came shortly after Google launched the new Material Design-inspired look for Chrome.
In an article on The keywordGoogle says:
The new Chrome Web Store is officially open for business. Previously available in limited preview, anyone can now access the redesigned store to easily find Chrome extensions and themes.
Our original coverage from August follows.
Available now, a “preview” version of the Chrome Web Store is available to virtually anyone, introducing a radical overhaul to the existing Web Store design. The new preview version can be viewed at chromewebstore.google.com, while the current Web Store defaults to chrome.google.com/webstore.
The redesigned Chrome Web Store – the last notable update in recent memory was in 2018 – takes on a much more modern look and akin to the recent Play Store web redesign. There’s a rotating list of plugins and themes highlighted on the ‘Discover’ home page, with categories, recommendations and more below.
Comparing the opening page of the two iterations of the Web Store, the difference is immediately apparent.

Beyond that, there are new tabs for “Plugins” and “Themes,” which also include plenty of sectioned recommendations, as well as a “Featured” banner at the top of the page.
Google first announced the Web Store redesign in a brief, unnoticed post last week. Google doesn’t specify in this article when this new design might take over by default, but in a developer article it mentions that users will be “encouraged” to try the new store over the next few weeks.
We are delighted to offer you a Preview from our redesigned Chrome Web Store to make it easier to find new themes and extensions. Changes include a modernized interface, custom extensions, and curated recommendations.
Thanks, Brian!
