The United States Women’s National Team has dominated football in recent years, but suffered a shock loss in its opening game of the 2020 Olympics.
Their star-studded side were beaten 3-0 by Sweden, who also sent them to the Rio Games quarter-finals five years ago.
The USWNT entered the tournament as a big favorite for the gold medal, to add to their impressive collection of won competitions.
They were on a 44-game unbeaten streak before the game in Tokyo on Wednesday.
They were 4/7 favorites to win the first prize with an incredible record of victories in four of the last six Olympic Games.
Megan Rapinoe started off the bench but their roster was full of seasoned stars like captain Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath started the game.
Stina Blacksteniu opened the scoring for Sweden 25 minutes into the first half and they took the lead until the break.
Blacksteniu added his second ten minutes after half-time before the result was sealed by Lina Hurtig.
Speaking after the loss to Sweden, Rapinoe said: “We got our ass kicked, didn’t we? I thought we were a little tight, a little nervous, just doing stupid stuff.
Their second group game is against New Zealand on Saturday, before facing Australia on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, there was a winning start for Great Britain who won 2-0 against Chile thanks to a brace from Ellen White.
