GLOW Academy fundraiser with celebrity chef attracts $ 1 million donation

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Girl’s Leadership Academy of Wilmington (GLOW) received a million dollar donation at their annual Celebrity Chef event on Friday night.

Ken Lowe, one of GLOW’s original funders, who works with academy founder Judy Girard, donated the money in honor of his 92-year-old mother and a wing of the school will be named in his honor.

At the Friday night event, which took place on the Wilmington Academy campus, around 500 guests were treated to an elegant dinner prepared by celebrity chefs including Robert Irvine.

“School is such an amazing adventure,” Irvine said. We empower 400 girls to become great leaders. You know GLOW is all about leadership with young women and we’re having a big fundraiser tonight. I can cook with some of my friends.

The school hosts the fundraiser every year, but academy founder Judy Girard says this year’s event is even more special given the circumstances students and faculty have endured throughout. of the pandemic.

“Every year we do one and this one feels very special because I think it’s the first time people have come out,” Girard said. “It’s 500 people eating out here and celebrating, and celebrating girls.”

Before dinner hit the plate, some of the students in attendance were fortunate enough to go viral by recording a question-and-answer session with Irvine, with the intention of posting it on TikTok.

It wasn’t just a chance for GLOW students to go viral and end up on your “For You” page, they used the discussion as a chance to learn more about Irvine’s career and what made it successful.

“They love to ask questions about people’s careers,” Girard said. “They just asked Robert ‘Why the food? How does food play in your world? ‘ and it’s not just about writing a recipe and cooking it and eating it, and they understand that.

Students are happy to be part of a unique learning experience, which they say the school has prepared them for over the past year.

“I feel like the teachers really did their best to make everything possible even though COVID was one thing and affected everyone so differently,” said Rosa Johnson, a student at GLOW Academy.

On Friday, the students were excited to have fun with a celebrity chef and have a fun evening before heading home for the summer.
