Police officers, some in plain clothes, responded to a robbery inside the Glendale Galleria at around 7:10 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Glendale Police Department. Officers made contact with the suspect inside Dick’s Sporting Goods store, police said.
“As they tried to arrest the suspect, a fight ensued and force was used by the police,” the statement said.
The buyer who recorded the incident, who did not want to be identified by the station, was outraged by the officer who kicked the suspect in the head, telling KCAL / KCBS that the officer ” was not even there to begin “.
“It was really hard to watch, we were traumatized,” said Melissa Navarette, identified by KCAL / KCBS as the suspect’s sister. She didn’t want to be shown on camera, according to the station. “We still have the whole video, like, stuck in our head,” she said.
Stolen goods were recovered from the suspect, according to Glendale Police, and he was arrested for theft and forcibly resisting an officer. Police said the merchandise came from another store in the mall.
Police are investigating officers’ conduct and asking witnesses to contact the department with any information about the incident.
“Glendale police officers are held to a high standard and we work hard to maintain the trust of our community,” said a press release from GPD. “We take these types of incidents very seriously. Appropriate action will be taken as a result of the investigation.”
