Peyton Manning explains why Tom Brady was ‘a big part of the reason’ he stayed in the AFC
An errant shot during a 2014 Pro-Am at Pebble Beach put Tom Brady in a scary spot years ago, Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Monday on Let’s Go! podcast with Brady and Jim Gray.
According to Belichick, Brady’s competitive spirit won out over his sense of danger that day.
“If I could sum up Tom Brady in one image, it would be on the 6th hole where he drove the ball to the right,” Belichick said. “It looked like it was going to be over the cliff when he left, you know he was way to the right. And we go down there and he’s standing above the cliff. He’s like ‘I think I see it.’ And he takes his club there and he climbs over the cliff. I can only like to see from her shoulders up.
Belichick said if Brady had fallen he would have been about 200 feet down with rocks below.
“There’s no way he’ll survive this fall,” Belichick said. “I look at the greatest quarterback, our star quarterback, and Tom Brady is standing there on a fucking ledge all the way off the rim of the hill to the 6th green.
“I’m like, it’s Tom Brady. No. 1, super competitive, he’s trying to hit that impossible shot, comes pretty close to honestly dying and landing in the fucking rocks 200 feet down. All of that in the name of competition and being the best you can be.
As he watched Brady return, Belichick had a suggestion that would have been a little less dangerous.
“I was like a man,” Belichick said. “When I saw him climbing the hill there I was like ‘just take the two-kick penalty man…I’m telling you, I’ve never been more worried about Tom physically than when I’m saw standing on that ledge trying to hit, not trying, hitting that ball to the sixth green at Pebble with a 25 mph wind too, just to make it interesting.
Brady said it was one of the dumbest moves he’s ever made.
“I’ve done a lot of stupid things [expletive]”, Brady said. “I’m glad I didn’t pay the price for that one, because it would have been unpleasant.
