At least two members of an Ocean County girls’ college basketball team were taunted with shameful racial slurs by opposing players during a game this week, according to a published report.
NJ.com reports that girls on the Lakewood Middle School basketball team were called “homeless” and Black b —— “by opposing players during a game on Wednesday in Russell O. Brackman Middle School, Barnegat.
The report says a girl has been labeled “homeless” on several occasions because she was not wearing sneakers, according to a lawyer for the Lakewood School District.
NJ.com reports that attorney Michael Inzelbuch released a statement on the incident on Thursday.

Inzelbuch says the Lakewood District is considering purchasing basketball sneakers for team members who don’t have the right shoes. 10 of the team’s 19 players do not have sneakers, according to the lawyer.
The incident was reported to the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association and the NJ attorney general’s office.
Barnegat Schools Superintendent Brian Latwis said the comments should have been brought to the attention of referees and coaches during the match “so that they can be dealt with immediately”.
“We take these allegations very seriously and have a comprehensive policy in place on harassment, intimidation and intimidation,” Latwis said in an emailed statement to NJ.com.
“This type of alleged behavior is not tolerated and we are working to determine the validity of these charges. We would have preferred to deal with this issue directly and more immediately, rather than being informed of the filing of incident reports by the media. “
My daughters play basketball in school, now in grade 9 and playing for high school in Atlantic City. The idea of another kid saying something like that to a 7th or 8th grade girl playing basketball in college is simply beyond my comprehension.
If these allegations are true, the Barnegat School District must deal with the students who were responsible immediately and severely.
The core values of school team sports are leadership and teamwork. If the Barnegat team made those comments to the Lakewood girls, someone definitely dropped the ball.
