Girl Spends Birthday Raising $3,000 For K-9 Police Unit: ‘Hometown Hero’

A girl spent her 10th birthday with police officers in New Kensington, Pa., benefiting one of the department’s dogs and dog handler. Now she is getting a lot of praise for this kind gesture.

“I wanted to do another fundraiser, so I chose it on my birthday,” Kaley Bastine said TribLive on Saturday before climbing into a dunk tank.

Photos showed the community gathered at the event and the young girl wearing a pink bathing suit and sunglasses.

“Kaley would like to thank everyone who showed up today for her k9 max celebration, even though it was her birthday it was all about the community! She raised a total of $3,762! Thank you for all your support for my daughter!” her mother, Jamie Bastine, wrote in the social media post.

The event included live music, food trucks and raffles.

Kaley has raised nearly $41,000 for law enforcement at events her family has planned over the past few years.

The recently raised funds went to Max, a Belgian Malinois, and dog handler, Officer Jerry Hobeck.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) website describes the breed as confident, intelligent, and hardworking, also noting that the animal “forges an unbreakable bond with its human partner.”

Meanwhile, Hobeck said, “I cannot express my gratitude to Kaley who organized a fundraiser for us. Fundraisers help us buy equipment and pay for our training. We go to a special training group four hours a week.

Hobeck was among those who jumped into the dunk tank to help raise even more money and said it was good to see the community enjoying themselves.

Meanwhile, social media users praised the girl’s efforts, with one person writing: ‘Wish I could have been there with my local hero Kaley. She is so caring and kind. Happy birthday, sweet girl!! »

“I love it…She’s an amazing little girl and I’m grateful to be a part of hers and yours…Love you all,” another replied.
