Gerrit Cole blames opening day festivities for poor start

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is unfazed by anything…apart from minor inconvenience.

Cole had a shaky start to the 2022 season on Friday, getting a rough ride on Opening Day by the Boston Red Sox. The All-Star right-hander gave up three earned runs in the first inning and didn’t even reach the fifth inning. Cole escaped with no decision as the Yankees came back and won in extra innings 6-5.

Then Cole offered the weirdest excuse for his poor performance. He said the delayed start to the contest (thanks to the opening day festivities at Yankee Stadium that lasted a bit long) was “an unforeseen challenge” for him. The length of the delay? Four full minutes (pushing back the first pitch from 1:08 p.m. to 1:12 p.m.).

“The festivities have gotten a little off schedule,” Cole said, by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Indeed, Cole was seen angrily shouting, “Let’s go!” from the dugout as the pre-game festivities continued.
