German CDU hit by major cyberattack – POLITICO

Politically motivated cyberattacks have increased in the run-up to this month’s European elections, with many linked to Russian state-sponsored actors. Juhan Lepassaar, director of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), told media last week that attempted attacks doubled between the last quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of this year.

“This is part of the Russian war of aggression, which they are waging physically in Ukraine but also digitally across Europe,” he said.

Earlier this month, the German government accused Moscow of a series of cyberattacks against lawmakers from the 2023 ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD), including Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“We can attribute this cyberattack to a group called APT28, led by Russian military intelligence,” Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told a news conference.
