Barcelona and Spain defender Gerard Pique and Colombian popstar Shakira have announced they have split after 11 years together.
Football is claimed to have left the family home, with both parties keen to make their two children the top priority during this troubling time.
The Barcelona star first met the global pop sensation in 2010 while filming the music video for Shakira’s hit ‘Waka Waka’. [This Time for Africa] – the soundtrack of the World Cup in South Africa.
In a statement released Saturday by Shakira’s communications agency, the Colombian singer said, “We regret to confirm that we are separating.
“For the well-being of our children, which is our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy.
“Thanks for understanding.”
The statement confirms the end of what will no doubt be remembered as one of football’s famous relationships, comparable to ‘Posh and Becks’, Victoria and David Beckham.
Of course, such a high-profile breakup will be difficult for Pique after a turbulent year both on and off the pitch.
