Georgia sheriff’s deputy shot dead Thursday morning in Alabama

UPDATE 10/14/2021 11:22 a.m. – The suspect who allegedly shot a Muscogee County deputy is in custody following an incident Thursday morning. The MP is listed as being in stable condition.

PHENIX CITY, Alabama – According to officials from the Phenix City Police Department, police responded to the Sandfort Road and Post Ridge Apartment area after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle that had struck the railing and a man inside who had been shot in the head.

At the 1200 block of Sandfort Road, a second vehicle involved in the incident was discovered by officers. The driver of the vehicle got out of the vehicle and fled into the woods, police said.

According to the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect identified as 31-year-old Jasmin Richardson has turned into the City of Phenix Police Department.

The deputy is currently undergoing surgery. His injuries are not considered life threatening at this time.

The shooting took place at 6:10 a.m. on Oct. 14, 2021, when Richardson opened fire on the deputy’s vehicle on his way to work from Phenix City, officials from the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office said. .

Authorities say the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information should contact the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office.

Update: News 3 learned that a Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot dead in Phenix City around 5:30 a.m. this morning. The deputy is said to be in stable condition. Stay with News 3 for updates on this developing story.

Previous reports: There is currently a strong police presence on Sandfort Road in Phenix.

Several Phenix City police cars could be seen around 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning and part of the road is covered with crime scene tape.

The US Marshal Fugitive Task Force is also on site.
