Georgia Heads For General Election With Major Consequences For Control Of Congress

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The primary elections have just ended in Georgia. Now the candidates have a general election in their sights, which could have major consequences for the party that controls Congress.

Football legend Herschel Walker won the Republican Senate primary race in Georgia on Tuesday. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is leading the Republican effort to win back the Senate, so he’s watching Georgia and Walker closely.

“I spoke to him last night. I think he had a good race, I think he’s on the right side of the trouble,” Scott said. “We need to get back into the majority to make sure we take votes that actually deal with inflation, the border, you know – what people are concerned about.”

Walker will face incumbent Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock in the November election. Walker has the backing of former President Donald Trump.

Georgia’s other Democratic senator, Jon Ossoff, thinks Warnock will survive the challenge thanks to his record.

“He provided health, public safety and economic opportunity for the people of our state,” Ossoff said.

Georgia is just one of many races across the country that have the potential to go both ways. The stakes are high, with both Democrats and Republicans battling for control of Congress.

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia wants to see Democrats highlight what they did while in a majority, like COVID recovery funding and the infrastructure package.

“We are coming out of a very dark time and we are climbing a ladder again. And I am proud to be part of the team helping to build the ladder,” Kaine said.

Things will likely heat up as Georgia edge closer to picking a winner, but both sides are expressing confidence in their nominee.
