Gary graduation shooting: 3 injured after multiple gunmen open fire at ceremony in Indiana

Indiana authorities responded to a shooting incident at a high school graduation ceremony on Sunday afternoon that left at least three people injured.

The shooting took place outside the RailCats ballpark in Gary, Indiana shortly after the West Side Leadership Academy graduation ceremony. The minor league baseball team’s home stadium is located less than five miles from the school, and Gary’s is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Chicago.

“A day that was meant to be celebrated has now been marked by tragedy with senseless acts of gun violence,” Gary Community School Corporation principal Dr. Paige McNulty said in a statement.

Around 6 p.m., shots rang out as graduates and guests left the stadium. The incident involved several gunmen, who were arrested at the scene, Fox 32 reported.

Two of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, while a third victim suffered other injuries, according to the report.

“Throughout the entire graduation, our students performed excellently. During this time, the disruptive actions of a few overshadowed their special moment,” McNulty continued. “Thankfully the attackers have been apprehended, but that doesn’t change the pain and disappointment that our students, their families and the school community are now feeling.”

“Our prayers are with the injured and we continue to congratulate the WSLA graduates,” the GCSC official also said. “They deserve it.”
