Los Angeles firefighters were battling a large open-air blaze that sent a column of black smoke visible across much of the South Bay Wednesday afternoon.
The fire started at an industrial facility in Wilmington at 1420 N. Alameda St. near the Marathon Los Angeles oil refinery, according to the LA Fire Department.
The blaze involves garbage and grass and is near shipping containers, firefighters said.
“Reports of loud noises nearby triggered an LAFD response to hazardous materials,” firefighters said.
