Game master Joel cuts an unprecedented deal with Helldivers 2 players: Pull off the ‘Martale Gambit’ and he’ll liberate two planets for the price of one
The Martale Gambit is launched.
As the Helldivers 2 community comes together to counter the Automaton’s latest advances in the Andromeda sector, an unconventional idea has emerged that utilizes a hidden mechanic in the galactic war simulation. If this works, Super Earth would be able to liberate two planets simultaneously, including one with an ongoing defense campaign. The goal is to free Charon Prime without fighting there by cutting the Automaton’s supply lines on the neighboring planet of Martale.
The players call it the Martale’s Gambit: Divert all Automata resistance to Martale for immediate liberation, and once the planet is taken, Charon Prime will also be freed. It’s a solid plan, but until a few hours ago, no one knew for sure that it would actually work.
On Helldivers Discord, players coordinated with community manager Spitz, who said the galactic war sim was designed to enable these tactics, although it would ultimately be up to Joel to implement it himself. Hours after the initial planning, Spitz returned to Discord with a rare dispatch from Joel himself. The Martale Gambit would be honored if the community could achieve it.
“The capture of Martale will not automatically end the defense of Charon, the system does not work that way,” Spitz wrote. “But Joel can award victory manually, and if Martale’s gamble succeeds, he will honor this commitment by granting victory to Charon.”
A quick explanation of how it all works: Every currently active Helldivers 2 planet is connected by supply lines. These lines are not visible on the in-game map, but they are visible on a community-run galaxy map website that pulls data from Arrowhead. The red arrow leading from Martale to Charon Prime (see photo below) means that the Automata need Martale to maintain control of Charon Prime. This is the goal of Martale’s gamble: to cut off the supply line so that the Automatons cannot hold Charon Prime.
It’s rare for Joel to comment on player activity, even indirectly, but this is an important mechanic to clarify, as it could shed light on how players approach future major commands. Spitz goes on to say that the intention is for this type of tactic to work automatically in the future.
“Since things like Martale’s Gambit are supposed to be possible automatically, if we ever pull off something like this in the future where we cut off an enemy planet by capturing the attached planets, ping me or send me a private message to let me know, and I will hand over to Joël so that he can make the system settings manually.”
A successful bet would save the community a lot of time and probably save a planet that is tending towards Automa domination. Currently, there are less than 16 hours left in the Charon Prime defense campaign with little progress made, but Martale is over 91% free (and still climbing). There are some concerns in Discord regarding Martale’s negative attrition rate at the moment, but an influx of players before the weekend could reverse the trend.
Another challenge facing Martale Gambit is the final major order. Currently, the goal is to carry out a total of 10 planetary defense campaigns. There are both Automaton planets and Terminid planets with active defense campaigns, and nothing in the game itself suggests that Martale is a relevant planet. Nonetheless, more than 22,000 divers are active on Martale as of this writing, and if word of mouth spreads, the coordination could pay off.
History has proven that the Helldivers 2 community is ready to take on just about any challenge Joel can throw at them. This morning, we wiped out two billion Terminids in just over 12 hours.
