Representative Matt Gaetz, mired in an ongoing federal sex trafficking investigation, visits former President Donald Trump’s resort town in Doral this Friday, where he will be one of the guest speakers at an organized summit by a pro-Trump conservative women’s group.
Women for America First announced Tuesday night that Gaetz will be a speaker at the three-day “Save America” summit. This is the same group that helped organize the “March for Trump” rally in Washington that took place just hours before the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol that left five people dead.
The organization praised Gaetz as one of the “few members of Congress” willing to “stand up and fight on behalf of President Trump and his America First agenda.” Women For America First says on its website that “we will not be pushed around by bullies who tell us who we are ‘supposed to’ love. And we’re not going to shut up just because Washington, DC’s ruling elites and the mainstream media want it!
Gaetz on Twitter thanked the group for “the invitation to share my vision of our great nation”.
This is one of the few public appearances by the congressman from Northwestern Florida since news first surfaced about whether he had had sex with a girl. 17 years old. Gaetz did an interview last week on Fox News with Tucker Carlson where he denied any wrongdoing, but whom Carlson later called one of the “strangest” of his career and who he said did little clarified what is happening.
Gaetz suggested the investigation was linked to a recent extortion plot targeting his wealthy family, but federal authorities launched the investigation last year. He also published an op-ed on Monday in which he explained that he was “not a monk” as far as his personal life is concerned, but added that he was not resigning from his ruby red district seat.
Gaetz has gained national attention for the past four years as a tireless supporter of Trump, as well as for his penchant for gripping events such as wearing a gas mask on the House floor during a debate on the coronavirus. Along the way, he clashed with the Democrats and targeted other Republicans, like Rep. Liz Cheney, for his vote to impeach the president in the wake of the January 6 riots.
So far, Trump and many other high profile Republicans have remained silent or have remained silent about Gaetz as details of the investigation have started to leak. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has been one of Gaetz’s main allies and called on him to help his transition team when he first took office, declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation .
Despite the salacious nature of the investigation, many Republicans at home in Gaetz’s District support him, saying he may have been targeted by the media because of his defense of Trump.
The summit in Doral coincides with a spring retreat for donors to the Republican National Committee which is held about 70 miles north in Palm Beach. Trump must attend the retreat.
