Cornwall Hospital “reserves space for G7 VIPs”

The Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro has reportedly set aside space in case it is needed for G7 dignitaries as well as those caught up in the planned protests.

The local Cornwall Live news site said the area for all summit-related patients was “small”.

The prospect of protests this weekend will have fueled local health plans ahead of the gathering of world leaders in Carbis Bay.

Earlier this week, the Lib Dems claimed two wards have been booked at Royal Cornwall Hospital for the G7.

Andrew George, the spokesperson for the Lib Dems in Cornwall, said The Guardian that ensuring that hospital beds were freed was an “inevitable consequence of the government’s failure to put in place proper plans before the G7 arrived.”

NHS Kernow, the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said there was sufficient capacity to deal with any additional demands related to the summit.

“As at any time when we expect demand for our services to increase, we are working with our health and care partners to build additional capacity in our hospitals,” the statement said. “We did this to make sure we are ready for the G7, as we would for any major event in the county.”

Risk of rain gutters Biden-Johnson trip

The two leaders were due to meet at Saint Michael’s Mount, a castle on a tidal island off the coast of Cornwall, for their talks ahead of the G7 summit.

A No 10 source told the PA News Agency that the visit to Saint Michael’s Mount was “on hold due to weather.”

Weather forecasts for Marazion, the town closest to Mont Saint-Michel, suggest the trip would have been hit by a high chance of rain around lunchtime with a moderate breeze.

Global immunization plan must be G7 priority, says Labor

Plans to deliver vaccines to less developed countries are expected to be the top of the G7 talks this week, Labor said.

Leader Sir Keir Starmer, speaking at Batley, said it was important for the UK to send vaccines to developing countries, but said “on its own is not enough”.

He said: “We need a global agreement; we need global funding.

“This should be the most important topic of discussion for the G7 this weekend.

“And, what I want to see from the Prime Minister is real leadership on this.”

Travel industry criticizes lack of detail in transatlantic plan

Plans to determine how transatlantic travel can be safely revived have been dismissed by industry leaders as lacking “clarity.”

Boris Johnson and Joe Biden will agree on Thursday to launch a task force to make recommendations on reopening international travel.

Virgin Atlantic chief executive Shai Weiss warned that “the lack of a definitive timeline” means airlines, businesses and consumers have not been given “much needed clarity.”

British Airways boss Sean Doyle was in desperate need of “action without delay, including clear criteria and a timetable”. Anything other than that could lead to difficult consequences. “

A spokeswoman for the Abta Travel Professionals Association said there was “little in this announcement in terms of details or timing.”
