From the Furys and Mayweathers to the Klitschko brothers and Leon and Michael Spinks, who ended his career with a quick loss to Mike Tyson – the top 10 boxing families ranked

Boxing clearly runs in the blood as there are plenty of brothers, cousins, fathers and sons – or fathers and daughters – who have proven themselves adept at the noble art of punching people in the face.

As we count down the 10 biggest and craziest families of boxers, we have one specific rule: at least two of the boxers must have fought at a high level. So Bobby Pacquiao being Manny’s younger brother or a teenage Canelo Alvarez sharing a map with about five of his brothers in Mexico doesn’t mean the Pacquiao or Alvarez families make the cut.

There is also no place – ever – for the Pauls. And no place – yet – for the Benns. Nigel was a legend in the British ring, and Conor Benn is improving fast, but it’s not done enough to crack the top 10. However, Nige, famous for his relaxed attitude, will not mind an old friend putting him on the list. Right?

10. The Eubanks

Simply the (10th) best. Two-weight world champion and British style icon Chris Eubank Sr gets the majority of the credit. But Chris Jr, who beat Liam Williams earlier this year, has proven himself a top 10 middleweight contender and could still win a world title belt. Chris Sr’s older brothers, twins Peter and Simon, also boxed professionally, while his son Sebastian – who tragically died of a heart attack aged 29 – also boxed pro twice, winning both.

9. The Hattons

Manchester’s lovable everyday man, Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, takes the lead: a two-weight world champion, winner of Kostya Tszyu and formidable ticket seller. But don’t sleep on his brother, Matthew, the less explosive but European welterweight champion who once took Canelo Alvarez the distance in a world lightweight-middleweight title fight. Campbell Hatton, 21, son of Ricky, is 7-0 and taking the first steps in his boxing career.

8. Charlos

A case of “Twins” where both are Arnold Schwarzenegger and no one is Danny DeVito. One minute older brother Jermall Charlo is a perfect 32-0 and has won world titles at 154lbs and 160lbs. However, Jermell Charlo has the best recent form, unifying all world light middleweight titles with a thrilling knockout of Brian Castano. Both are on the fringes of the top 10 pound-for-pound debate right now and, at 32, still have plenty in the tank.

7. Blacksmiths

No, not the group – even if there are enough of them to create one. What the Liverpool Smiths lack in a great fighter, they make up for in consistency. All four brothers fought for world titles and while Paul and Stephen had good careers, Liam and Callum went further. Liam is a 154lb former world champion who is fresh off two great wins in a row, while younger brother Callum – a former super middleweight world champion whose only loss is to Canelo Alvarez – is aiming for 175lbs.

6. Furies

Tyson Fury does the heavy lifting as you would expect of a conquering 6-foot-9 heavyweight champion. But the Fury clan is decidedly numerous. Hughie Fury is less spectacular than Tyson, but is a solid heavyweight contender. Tommy Fury is an undefeated prospect (quality: TBC). Peter Fury is a very good coach. And “Gypsy” John Fury used to box, even though he wasn’t that good (nobody told him we said that). And after? Paris Fury puts on the gloves?

5. The Klitschkos

You may have heard of these units. The second set of brothers to become world heavyweight champions and each was a true No. 1 in the division for a long time. Older brother Vitali Klitschko had a granite chin and a fearsome punch. Wladimir could also punch – the pair have a whopping 94 knockouts between them – was more vulnerable but the sleeker boxer. Boast a total of 40 world title defenses and currently show incredible courage in Ukraine.

4. The Marks

Smaller than the Klitschkos but, narrowly, better pound for pound. Juan Manuel Marquez, who had four famous fights with Manny Pacquiao, is among the greatest Mexican fighters in history. However, his less technically perfect but often more exciting younger brother Rafael Marquez was also a multi-weight world champion who had his own stunning four-fight streak (against Israel Vazquez). Both are in the boxing hall of fame.

3. The Alis

Muhammad Ali’s name speaks for itself, as he is the greatest heavyweight of all time and the most famous athlete of the 20th century. So it’s a good start. But her daughter Laila Ali is a great in her own right, the face of women’s boxing in the early 2000s who retired with a flawless 24-0 record. Muhammad’s brother Rahman Ali was a fringe heavyweight contender in his day, while grandson Nico Ali Walsh is just beginning his journey. No pressure, huh?

2. The Spinks

Leon and Michael Spinks are the first brothers to win the heavyweight title. The last 91 seconds of Michael’s career – when he was pulverized by a Mike Tyson spike – sadly might be what many people remember him for, but he was a great all-time lightweight champion.

Additionally, Leon’s son, Cory Spinks, was a skilled southpaw who won world titles in two weight classes (147 lbs, 154 lbs) and challenged in a third. Three elite boxers in one line.

1. The Mayweathers

Las Vegas boxing royalty. Floyd Mayweather Jr is one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of all time who retired with a 50-0 record and is now doing shows like fighting 50 Cent underwater in Dubai (likely in 2023). His uncle Roger was a dangerous two-weight world champion in the 1980s; while Father Floyd Sr and Uncle Jeff were also strong contenders. Add to that their coaching careers and the Mayweathers are clearly the ultimate fighting family.
