His journey of standing in front of a microphone and telling jokes at CM headquarters only lasted 11 years. However, Sangrur’s parliamentary double is no stranger to fandom.

Mann tasted popularity at the age of 18 when he released his audio tape while studying B.Com at Shaheed Udham Singh Government College, Sunam, Indian Express reported.

He later rose to prominence with his long-running TV shows Jugnu Kehnda Hai and Mast Jugnu Mast. Mann is famous for his social and political satire. In 2008, he became the undisputed king of comedy when he took part in the Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star Plus. Mann also acted in the film “Main Maa Punjab Dee” which won the national award.

At the height of his acting career, Mann joined the People’s Party of Punjab, founded by Manpreet Singh Badal, nephew of Patriarch Akali Parkash S Badal. In 2012, Mann took his first chance at the election, taking on former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal of Lehra (Sangrur) for the Punjab People’s Party.

Later, when Badal merged his party with Congress, Mann accepted the invitation of AAP national leader Arvind Kejriwal. In 2014, Mann contested from the seat of Sangrur LS against the leader of Akali SS Dhindsa and won by a record margin of over 2 lakh votes.

Mann remained with the AAP and became the most visible face in the 2017 Assembly polls in Punjab. However, he was reappointed head of state by the AAP a year later.

In 2019, Mann won the general election by 111,111 votes and became the party’s only MP from Punjab.

“He is the son of the soil who defied two waves of Modi (2014 and 2019) and stood with the party when his peers defected,” Moneycontrol said, citing an executive.

Mann has established a strong connection with the people of Punjab through his NGO Lok Lehar Foundation. The non-profit organization helps children suffering from physical deformities due to groundwater pollution along the Punjab border.

Although Mann was immensely popular in the state, some BJP leaders claimed that Mann appeared to give speeches in parliament while inebriated, saying he was often “in good spirits”. Mann’s drunken dates earned him the nickname Pegwant Mann.

In 2019, Mann pledged to stay away from alcohol. The 2022 election saw a sober and restrained Mann.
