Freshpet recalls dog food for potential Salmonella contamination

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN)—Freshpet is recalling a batch of dog food due to potential Salmonella contamination.

The recall involves Freshpet Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe (4.5 lb bag) with an on-sale date of October 29, 2022, according to the FDA.

There is a risk to people and their pets from Salmonella. According to the FDA, “children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals” are at risk when handling products contaminated with Salmonella.

The FDA says people infected with Salmonella should watch for these symptoms and should contact their doctor:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal cramps
  • fever

And dogs that have Salmonella infections can show symptoms of lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, according to the FDA.

Dogs with Salmonella can also infect other animals or people, the FDA said.

If you have given the recalled product to your dog and he is showing symptoms, the FDA advises you to contact your veterinarian.

Freshpet says if you have any of the recalled products, don’t use it. They said the product had shipped to stores within the past two weeks and “no other Freshpet products or lot codes are affected” by the recall.

The impacted dog food may have been sold at select Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia, as well as Target stores and other stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York , Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia, according to a statement.

Freshpet said in a statement that it has not received any reports of “illness, injury or adverse reactions.”
