Frenkie de Jong fails to dismiss Man United rumors saying ‘I can’t say anything’ in awkward interview, marking a sea change from ‘I want to stay at Barcelona’ weeks ago

Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong has given an awkward response when asked to swap Barcelona’s beaches for England’s chill.

The Dutch midfield maestro is in the midst of a transfer struggle with cash-strapped Barca in need of cash and Erik ten Hag desperate to reunite with his former Ajax star.

TalkSPORT sources understand that the Red Devils are growing confident of landing De Jong, as well as Ajax’s Antony.

The 25-year-old starred for Ten Hag in Amsterdam, playing a key role as Ajax narrowly missed out on the 2019 Champions League final after an epic run and then he landed a move to Spain.

However, the £77m signing has had his playing time restricted by Star Academy graduates Pedri, Gavi and Nico, and is now Barca’s best chance to raise funds.

And with Old Trafford links also making headlines overseas, De Jong was asked about the move by a cheeky reporter.

After the Netherlands’ 2-2 Nations League draw against Poland, a Spanish journalist asked: “Are you going to move from the beaches of Catalonia to the cold of Manchester?

The question made De Jong laugh, who replied, “No, I don’t think I can say anything yet.”

And failed to dismiss the rumors

The reaction stands in stark contrast to the midfielder’s comments just a few weeks ago when he left Barcelona to join Louis van Gaal’s Oranje.

Asked about the potential to reunite with Ten Hag on May 31, De Jong said: “I feel good at Barcelona. I want to stay at Barca.

” I have already said it. Barça has been my dream club since I was little. The leaders of Barça did not tell me anything.

“They didn’t tell me to come up with anything, so I understand there’s no operation going on. Maybe something has changed since that day.

Despite the post-match smiles, De Jong was given the chance to take part in media duties after taking on an unpleasant challenge from former West Brom man Grzegorz Krychowiak, which he said ‘should have been a red card’.
