Activist says truckers’ movement is like a ‘boa constrictor’ coming to ‘squeeze’ US capital
One of the people behind the American Freedom Convoy revealed to Fox News on Monday that the truckers planned to besiege the US capital, hugging it like a “Boaconstrictor.”
Bob Bolus said the protesters’ main gripe was the vaccination mandates, and to get the U.S. government to drop them, the convoy planned to “surround Washington DC » a bit like a “giant boa constrictor, which, as he put it, “squeezes you, chokes you, then swallows you.“The activist went on to warn”that’s what we’re going to do in DC.”
Apparently the truckers, who dubbed their movement the “Great American Patriot Project,” are targeting the Capital Beltway that surrounds Washington.
Responding to concerns expressed by Fox News reporter Lindsay Watts that the protest could interfere with the lives of ordinary people, and even potentially endanger human life by blocking emergency vehicles, Bolus said the truckers would leave a lane free for emergency services. He stressed that the Freedom Convoy would not be “jeopardize the safety or health of anyone in any way.”
Watts claimed in a tweet that the DC Department of Motor Vehicles’ Enforcement Division was having trouble finding towing companies willing to remove the trucks participating in the convoy.
The truckers’ arrival could coincide with Joe Biden’s State of the Union address to Congress on March 1.
As of Friday, Capitol Police said local, state and federal law enforcement and the District of Columbia National Guard are aware of the protesters’ plans and are coordinating their efforts.
According to multiple media outlets, authorities plan to erect fences around Congress to prevent any security breaches during Biden’s speech. On top of that, police in Washington, DC reportedly banned officers from taking time off or days off this week.
The Great American Patriot Project is made up of several grassroots groups from across the country, with hundreds of trucks heading for the US capital. The truckers were inspired by the Freedom Convoy protest in Canada, where activists blocked downtown Ottawa with their vehicles for three weeks, before police broke up the rally using force and arrested around 170 protesters.
