Frank Sanchez received a bizarre technical decision victory over Nagy Aguilera after a heated showdown with British heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury.
The undefeated Cuban had faced WBC champion in the weigh-in Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders, exchanging heated words with Fury, but Sanchez was denied the opportunity to send a warning with a knockout victory.
Sanchez’s 18th bout ended prematurely when he hit Aguilera behind the head in the sixth round, sending his opponent crashing to the canvas.
Despite the time it took to recover, Aguilera refused to continue and the fight went to the scoreboard after the accidental foul, with Sanchez coming out victorious with three 60-54 results.
Sanchez, who is guided by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez coach Eddy Reynoso, consolidated his No.6 position in the WBO rankings.
On the same bill, Souleymane Cissokho had to overcome a ninth round knockdown before sealing a split decision victory over Kieron Conway.
The Frenchman took a knee after an uppercut from the Northampton fighter, but took the win with scores of 96-93 and 95-94, while the third judge scored 97-92 at Conway.
