Four dead, dozens injured after multiple gunmen shoot ‘people in open air’ in Birmingham Five Points South

At least four of the shooting victims have life-threatening injuries.

Magnolia Avenue South here in the Five Point South neighborhood. This call has been updated to indicate that multiple individuals had been shot. Our officers arrived on scene when they observed two adult males and one adult female unresponsive on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds. We also began to locate several other gunshot victims in and around the area. Additionally, multiple victims began arriving at various hospitals throughout our city of Birmingham. Firefighters arrived on scene in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. Our medics pronounced the two adult males and the adult female deceased at the scene. I just gathered information from our team that a quarter of the victim has now been pronounced deceased at UAB Hospital. So we have a total of four deceased victims as of today after speaking with our officers and detectives. We have dozens of gunshot victims in this area. I am told that at least four of these gunshot victims are life threatening. The others have various injuries. Here’s what we know so far in this investigation, we believe that multiple shooters fired multiple shots at a group of people in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. There is no one in custody and we cannot stress to the public how important it is for us to have information in this investigation. We have reached out to our partners at the FBI. You will have a plethora of law enforcement agencies assisting the Birmingham Police Department and rest assured that we are going to do everything we can to make sure that we uncover, identify and track down who was ever responsible for the attack on our people this morning. So if you have any information, please contact Crime Stoppers. That’s your best option. You can remain anonymous and you can receive up to $5,000 in cash for your information. So, the Birmingham Fire Department said they transported eight people from the scene. Okay. So, we have three deceased at the scene. Yes, ma’am. Eight people transported from the scene, one of whom we believe passed away at UAB Hospital. Yes, ma’am. How many more right now, we have dozens of gunshot victims that are in various hospitals in these types of situations. When you lock down the number of ***, that number typically changes. So we can actually say we have dozens of gunshot victims in this area, over 24 unknowns on that number, but we have dozens of victims. We’re not going to lock down the number of *** at this time. But when we finalize everything, we’ll provide that number to our media partners. This group of people outside of the *** business here, where specifically were they, we’re told all of the victims were out in the open, either on the *** sidewalk or on the street. So this group of shooters shot these victims while they were out in the open. We’re not told that this happened inside a business. It was on the *** sidewalk or *** street in the city, and the shooters were also in a car. Our detectives are working to confirm whether the shooters walked over the victims or drove by ***. And that’s why we need the public’s help. There’s no information too small in an investigation like this. Do you have *** number of shots fired? We’re just going to say multiple shots fired. Do you know why this group was there? Was there a *** party or an event on this street? It’s just *** beautiful night *** Saturday. This is one of the most popular entertainment districts in Birmingham. So you can always expect *** crowds. Um Right now, we’re focused on getting these shooters off the street. We can’t stress enough that if you are a *** business owner and you have *** business in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue or the surrounding area, we can’t stress enough how important this is. If you have surveillance footage, please contact the Birmingham Police Department. We know that this area is loaded with cameras if you own *** business in the Five Point South neighborhood in and around the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. We need you. Witnesses have said that uh, many victims were lining up to get into the *** hookah lounge that is down this hallway. Is that correct? Yes, ma’am. There are many businesses in and around this area. So this area typically has a lot of foot traffic on the night of the Billy Bryant Park homicide. Yes, ma’am. Multiple officers left there and came to fight here, in the exact same spot. Is this a problem area? This area is known to our officers as a place where people congregate because there are local businesses nearby that they frequent. And what this homicide showed us is that we have a ton of resources with our businesses in the form of surveillance cameras. If you have any businesses in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue, again, we need you because we know that your surveillance footage captured something at a second. I’m going to call Megan real quick and I’m going to call you Ms. Carol and we don’t have any arrests, I believe, on the other one. How do we focus on this one? What about this one? What about a second mass shooting in the city in a matter of months? Well, first of all, what we’re doing is we’re pulling together all of our resources. We have a tremendous resource, the Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, that we can rely on for any crime. But there’s nothing that can’t help the public. There is no better resource than the public. And that’s why we put out a call to the public. If you’re here, if you’ve seen something, if you’ve heard something, please contact Crime Stoppers. 2052547777. And also speaking to the fact that these mass shootings have more to do with culture than they do with crime. Mayor Randall Woof said it best this week, we’re seeing far too many disputes settled by gunfire and I think it’s a reflection of what our mayor has said recently, it’s likely that switches were used. Do you have anything to back that up? Do you think there was more than one gun? How many shooters? Great question. We’re investigating that there were multiple shootings and we’re investigating that there may have been switch use, which shows how important this is. We’re getting anyone off our streets who has those types of weapons in their arsenal. Our goal right now is, is that it, but I’ll keep you updated on the information. Can we expect an update tomorrow at any time at a press conference or something? We’ll keep you updated. We’ll keep you updated. And what we’d also like to do is try to create a resource for anyone who has information. If you remember the mass shooting that happened in July, we were able to pull together some of the resources that we have in terms of technology and we were able to create a specific space where people can send video evidence. We’re in the process of doing that for our community. It was just after 11:00 PM that our officers got the call of shots fired. And then after that, uh, multiple victims came in and let me just close with that in these situations. A lot of times, the focus is on the Birmingham Police Department in terms of our response. And what we’re doing tonight is showing you that the women and men of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department and the women and men of UAB Hospital are absolutely amazing and it’s a testament to what they’re going through again. Often times, the spotlight is on us, but we rarely get the opportunity to publicly thank the Birmingham Fire Department and UAB Hospital for the extraordinary work that they do and the stress and trauma that it brings. So let’s publicly thank the Birmingham Fire Department and UAB Hospital. Ladies and gentlemen, you do.
