Formula 1: Mercedes re-evaluated the design of its W14 car after realizing that its “zeropod” concept was not performing as expected. The team decided to change direction and secured promising results from their computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel work. The changes will be to the sidepods, but the final concept change will involve things like the configuration window and ride height. Follow Formula 1 live updates only at InsidesSports.in

The team’s lead driver, Lewis Hamilton, expressed his disappointment with the previous model. The W14 design failed to keep up with the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian seasons, forcing the team to focus on necessary model upgrades. Team principal Toto Wolff has made it clear that the team’s priority is to make the fastest Formula 1 racing car possible. He also said he didn’t mind if their search for a more competitive car resulted in a design similar to Red Bull’s.

Wolff said: “I think at this point we have no dogmatism about the look of the car,” Wolff explained. “It just has to be the fastest race car possible.

“And if that car looks like a Red Bull or SpaceX, I don’t care, it just has to be fast.

“And if it’s a Red Bull, we’ll put a little bull somewhere with a sticker, and I won’t be ashamed if it’s fast.”

Hamilton spoke of the imperfections of the model and the need for new plans to improve or modify it. The Mercedes team is now ready to take a new direction in the pursuit of speed, even if it means emulating Red Bull’s winning formula.

The zeropod design of Mercedes W14 was a crucial element which was carried over from its predecessor. However, it could be replaced with styling reminiscent of Red Bull’s successful cars, which have won 11 of the last 12 races and the Constructors’ title in 2022.

Wolff said the team is reviewing every aspect of the car and sidepod design. It is therefore clear that the car is literally upset at the moment and everyone is eagerly awaiting the result.
