Mick Schumacher will remain at Haas for the 2022 Formula 1 season alongside Nikita Mazepin, the team have confirmed.

Schumacher and Mazepin have formed a rookie partnership for this season and, while an underdeveloped car left them fighting only at the back of the grid, Haas was impressed with their young drivers.

Schumacher, the son of seven-time F1 champion Michael, has been mentioned for a possible transfer to the also Ferrari-powered Alfa Romeo, but has instead been retained by the team who are bottom of the standings but have high hopes for the season. next, when an overhaul of the rules could upset the order.

The confirmation means that the seat at Alfa Romeo is now the only vacant position on the 2022 grid.

“We knew we wanted continuity behind the wheel in 2022 and I’m happy to confirm exactly that with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin competing for Haas next year,” said team boss Guenther Steiner, who also said the pair had “risen to the challenge” of 2021.

“Now that we look into the 2022 season, we are confident that we can move forward as a team and offer Mick and Nikita a competitive racing package to take the next step in their Formula 1 careers.”

Schumacher, who is also a junior driver for the Ferrari team with which his father won five of his seven crowns, added: “Being part of the Formula 1 peloton I am living my dream.

“The new technical regulations, the impressive ambition of the entire Haas F1 team and the support from Ferrari – of course I think that will bring us closer to the pitch in the 2022 season and we can fight for points.

“I look forward to being part of a growing team, and I will do whatever I can on my side to move us forward.”
