Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet scores the Puskas of the Season Award contender’s goal in Marseille’s win but crowds cloud the Europa Conference League clash as fans launch fireworks

Dimitri Payet scored a stunning half-volley in Marseille’s 2-1 win over Greek side PAOK in the Europa Conference League – a stunning strike that many fans are already eyeing to earn the goal of the season.

The former West Ham star brilliantly managed to overcome a bouncing ball, which flew into the top corner after it was played to him on the edge of the box.

The strike saw Payet equal his single-season record of 13 goals, having done so in the 2010/11 and 2012/13 campaigns when he played for Saint-Etienne and Lille respectively.

And he did it at the age of 35 – the trial class is definitely permanent.

Brazilian midfielder Gerson, who was later sent off in stoppage time, put the Ligue 1 side ahead. Omar El Kaddouri pulled one back for PAOK early in the second half.

But Payet won the match in the best possible way to give Marseille the first leg advantage in the quarter-finals.

However, the contest was overshadowed by shocking scenes between the two sets of fans, with clashes before and during the match.

Loud bangs were heard from the stands as fireworks were launched inside the ground, with opposing fans appearing to aim them at each other.

Tensions began earlier when riot police were called when fans of the two teams clashed outside a hotel where PAOK fans were staying.

The Daily Mail says flares were thrown inside the hotel as ‘hooligans’ stormed the French town, with the entrance to the building sustaining damage.

He adds that minor injuries were suffered by the participants in the clash. The Greek media Sports DNA claims that it was provoked by Marseille supporters.

Speaking at the time of the clash, Rudy Manna of the French police union told BFM Marseille: ‘There were a few small scuffles which were immediately put down by the police.

“Currently, the supporters are in their hotel and the police are monitoring the scene. And then we will also have to monitor the groups of supporters who are gradually arriving in the city to attend a football match.

Manna also said that between 50 and 60 of the Greek club’s fans attacked a police vehicle in Marseille.

Then posting on Twitter during the match, Manna said: “When crazy fans come to Marseille for a football match”, followed by an angry face emoji.

“Full support for injured colleagues. Courage to the police who have been working since last night and still part of the night to maintain a semblance of security. It is work that is out of the ordinary. »

The clashes continued in the stadium, with videos on social media appearing to show supporters from both sides shooting fireworks at each other.

Riot police entered the grounds as they finally dispersed the scenes.
