Former U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, died Saturday in Salt Lake City at the age of 88, according to a statement from his foundation.

Hatch, who served in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 2019, was the longest-serving senator in Utah history and was president pro tempore of the Senate.

He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, according to the statement.

Hatch is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their six children.
