Former Nick star Josh Peck calls sobriety ‘the foundation of my life’

Josh Peck says sobriety has been “wonderful” and a “foundation that really grounded me”.

The ‘Drake & Josh’ star, 35, developed a drug and alcohol problem after losing 127 pounds and entering rehab in 2008.

“I’m lucky to have found healing through a 12-step program almost 14 years ago and it’s something I still do regularly to this day,” he told Page Six in a recent interview. “It gives me a lot of structure in my life. It’s really the foundation of my life and from there all these wonderful things have been built.

The Manhattan-born actor who wrote about his battle with drugs and alcohol in his memoir, “Happy People Are Annoying,” said sobriety also “introduced me to a level of spirituality and the way to embrace stoicism and ancient truths gave me a grounding that really grounded me.

Peck jokingly added that his mother – who raised him alone – and his wife Paige O’Brien “make sure I don’t overstep the mark”.

The Nickelodeon alum can currently be seen as a rabbi helping a worshiper get ready for his bar mitzvah in the Netflix movie, ’13: The Musical’ and says he’s “incredibly proud to be Jewish.” I think it’s something that, as I got older, became more important to me.

One of the reasons Peck was eager to play a role in the film was to work with director Tamra Davis, who made the documentary ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child’ about the artist who died of an overdose. of heroin in 1988.

“Jean-Michel Basquait is one of my personal heroes,” he explained, “so selfishly that I knew I would pester her on set asking her for stories about Basquait.”

It’s also a busy time in Peck’s personal life.

He and O’Brien are expecting their second child together and are already parents to 3-year-old son Max. Peck confesses that before Max was born, he was terrified of becoming a father, having never met his own.

“Having a dad in many ways would have hopefully given me some structure or a playbook on how to be a dad,” he shared, “but luckily I had enough. apostles in my life, my stepfather, who I really look up to, and my brother from the Big Brother Jewish Foundation, Dan, who has been a part of my life since I was 8. I’m so lucky to to have great men in my life that I could go to for advice and guidance and to mirror the things they’ve done so well with their children.
