The “Super League” is dead, long live the “Champion’s Léon” ! While the presidents of the richest professional football clubs in Europe had to resolve to abandon their closed league project, on the Leon side, amateur clubs are refining the organization of a friendly competition across the northeast of the department. A concept straight out of the mind of Benoît Milin, the coach of FC Guiclan. “Be careful, it will not be a closed circle. Do not mess around ”, reassures this passionate football fan. Even if the perimeter is absolutely not intended to move. “The goal is to organize preparation matches this summer in a fun way, while reducing travel costs. It will also allow players from local clubs to get to know each other better and it will bring in supporters. We have nothing against clubs in neighboring territories, but we want to highlight Leon! “.
Group stage from August 6 to 15
The one who is also an organizer of football courses for 8-11 year olds, had little trouble convincing his colleagues. Sixteen clubs responded to his invitation, placed in three hats, for a draw which will take place on Saturday, May 22, at 6 p.m., in Guiclan (broadcast live on the Facebook page Footballeps29 exercises). In the first, that of the seeds, there are four clubs playing in R2 (Landi FC, AG Plouvorn, ES Saint-Thégonnec and SC Morlaix). In the second, seven clubs from R3 (FC Guiclan, US Cléder-Sibiril, AS Berven-Plouzévédé, ES Carantec-Henvic, AS Saint-Martin-des-Champs, AS Santec, Bodilis-Plougar FC) and EF Plougourvest ( leader of his group of D1 when the championship ended).
Four D1 clubs make up hat 3 (SP Plouescat, Stade Léonard Kreisker in Saint-Pol-de-Léon, ES Plounéventer and Gars de Plouénan).
The group stage of the first “Champion’s Léon” in history will take place between Friday 6 and Sunday 15 August. “We’re going to create four groups, each made up of one R2, two R3s and one D1. Each team will play three matches, when it suits them, ”explains Benoît Milin.
“Sporting merit will prevail”
And after ? As in the “Champion’s League”, the first two in each pool will qualify for the final stages (direct elimination), which will be played in two-way matches, “when there are gaps in the federal calendar”. The same goes for the last two, which will be transferred to the “Leon League”, little sister of the “Champion’s Léon” and equivalent of the “Europa League”. The finals should be played on the same day, at the end of the season. Benoît Milin hopes that they will be held in Guiclan, where this original idea was born which made the buzz beyond Finistère. “It would be justice,” he slips, smirking. The following years, we can imagine a draw. “
This shows if the man intends to anchor this new “cool” competition in the local football landscape. “I repeat, it will not be closed. Depending on the climbs and descents, it may change from one year to the next. The R2 and R3 clubs will always have a guaranteed place, but it is sporting merit that will prevail. “
Everything to make an illusion
As he is the type to take care of details, Benoît Milin went to the end of the theme. And used his contacts in the world of pro football to dig up six official Champions League balls. “I also got some ‘Europa League’ balls, which will be used for warming up. As well as chasubles, gourds and Champions League water bottle holders. We did not take half measures. Otherwise, it was useless, ”he confides enthusiastically. Benoît Milin even went so far as to buy a replica of the cup with big ears, to create an illusion. “She’s 8 kg and the size of an 8-year-old kid,” he laughs. All that remains is to know if the anthem of the Champions League will resonate in the Leon stadiums on match days.
