Chelsea extended European Club World Cup dominance by beating Palmeiras 2-1 after extra time on Saturday to win the intercontinental title for the first time.

Kai Havertz, the striker who scored Chelsea’s winner in last season’s Champions League final, again proved he was the man for the big occasion by converting the decisive penalty with three minutes left play in overtime.

Romelu Lukaku gave Chelsea the lead in the 55th minute of the Abu Dhabi final but Raphael Veiga equalized nine minutes later.

European champion, UEFA Super Cup winner and now club world champion. It was quite the start of a term for Thomas Tuchel, who made it to the final after missing the semi-finals while self-isolating after contracting the coronavirus.

Chelsea are the ninth successive European winners of the title, dating back to 2013. The last European team to lose in the final? Chelsea at Corinthians in 2012.

Palmeiras is the Copa Libertadores champion.
