On Saturday, the Avalanche and Golden Knights hit the ice at 3 p.m. ET, then played for a period before their NHL outdoor game was put on hold. Play resumed at midnight on the East Coast with the Avalanche skating on the winner. Sunday will be the turn of the Flyers and Bruins under the lights.
The 32nd NHL Roofless Tilt will be played on top of a golf course. Yes, the fastest game in the world will return to the green – the 18th par 5 fairway at Edgewood Tahoe Resort on the south shore of Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada, to be exact. And while it is disappointing that fans cannot attend, this match will have one of the most beautiful settings in the history of the sport: Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
At 6,224 feet above sea level, this will be the second highest location for an outdoor competition; the Avs and Kings faced off at 6,621 feet in last year’s Stadium Series at the US Air Force Academy’s Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo.
This will be the Flyers ‘fifth away game (1-2-1) and the Bruins’ fourth (2-1-0). These teams met at Fenway Park on New Years Day 2010, with the host Bruins winning 2-1.
While the two teams will face off in a picturesque setting, there are still two big points to be won. Both teams are seated atop the Eastern Division standings with the Bruins in first place and the Flyers just three points (tied with the Capitals).
