Flyers cling to losing streak with Win Over Capitals

the Leaflets were fast approaching another set of historic proportions, even as they found ways to lose games where they were in a position to claim victory. Saturday afternoon, they finally did it to find themselves on the right side of the result.

The Flyers held off a late push from the Capitals to secure a 2-1 victory, ending their six-game losing streak.

The Flyers wasted no time getting onto the set. After only 11 seconds of play, Claude Giroux got the puck from Cam Atkinson in the slot and fired a past shot Ilya Samsonov to make it 1-0 Flyers. It was Giroux’s 17th goal of the season and 290th of his career, tying it with Eric Lindros for eighth all-time in Flyers history.

The Flyers killed two penalties in the rest of the period, including an extra minor foul given to Zack McEwen following a fight with Thomas Wilson. When the penalty expired, the Flyers rushed in and added to their lead. A big blow of Rasmus Ristolainen behind the Flyers’ net allowed them to gain possession, then led to a 3-on-1. Scott Laughton fed Atkinson, who had to regain control before leveling a shot at Samsonov to make it 2-0 with his first goal in eight games and 18th of the season.

In 20 minutes, the shots were 14-9 Flyers.

The Capitals got another power play chance in the second and did some quick work. After TJ Oshie took a penalty against Isaac RatcliffeOshie was on the receiving end of a pass from Nicklas Backstrom into the slot for the quick release and the goal to get Washington on the board at 6:53.

The Capitals controlled possession for most of the period, beating the Flyers 11-4. The Flyers had 49 seconds of 5-on-3 time during the period, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.

In two periods, Washington had a 20-18 shooting lead.

For most of the third period, the Flyers defended their own end. In the aftermath, the Flyers found key blocks, including the stick of Travis Sanheim and a final shot blocked by patrick brown.

Carter Hart made 27 saves in the win. Samsonov made 20 saves in the loss.

Atkinson finished with a goal and an assist.

The Flyers will be back on the ice Tuesday night to continue their home game against the Edmonton Oilers at 7 p.m.
