Floyd Mayweather shares how he decided to sign Gervonta Davis after watching a workout with Devin Haney

Floyd Mayweather shared how he first decided to sign Gervonta Davis in 2015.

The pound-for-pound king of boxing was riding high at the time after beating Manny Pacquiao a month before and was ready to watch his close friend Adrien Broner in a big fight with Shawn Porter.

With Broner vs Porter scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, Floyd was able to attend the weigh-in on Friday and then return to his own Mayweather Boxing Gym in the evening.

When he did, he witnessed a legendary workout between two highly rated youngsters.

Gervonta was only 20 at the time, but was already developing a reputation as an 11-0 pro.

Meanwhile, Haney was only 16 and was set to make his professional debut.

Mayweather said of Gervonta: “He came to the gym.

“It was the day before Adrien Broner who fought Shawn Porter.

“Right after the weigh-in we went to the gym – we wanted to see the Devin Haney ‘Tank’ box.

“Haney was in good shape, ‘Tank’ was not in good shape, but they worked, it was crazy work.

“It was crazy and entertaining work at the time.

“So I said, ‘You know what, I love that kid.’

“I think my assistant contacted him on social media.

“We met in New York after that and the next day he was on a yacht with me in Miami. I move. We did it.

“We were in Dubai, we were in Egypt, but I was already doing these trips around the world a long time ago – I wanted to show him that. “

Soon after, the deal was made and work began to make Gervonta a boxing star.

He won the IBF world super featherweight title 18 months later and is now on course for massive fights with Mayweather by his side.
