On Friday, MSNBC host Joy Reid and her guests slammed Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, calling him an “authoritarian leader” and saying he “is groomed to be the next great magician in the GOP.”

Speaking to his guests, Democratic strategist Fernand Amandi and MSNBC contributor Dean Obeidallah, Reid opened the segment by sharing his fears that DeSantis is “essentially creating a Republican superstate where it doesn’t matter how you vote, where he is entirely controlled by the Republicans”.

“Is there a way to stop this?” she asked before letting her guests speak.

Amandi, a frequent MSNBC guest, posted her apocalyptic assessment of DeSantis’ situation: “Joy, you asked the most important question, because for 246 years in this country, the answer to that question – is there- Is there a way to stop that? – would have been, ‘Well, yes! You can stop it at the polls in November.'”

Although he admitted that he no longer believed that voting could work in Florida, he added: “I’m not so sure that even if the will of the voters called for an end to this madness that is happening in Florida, that would happen. Because Florida, I don’t think, is more of a democracy.”

“I think Florida is really an authoritarian state modeled after Hungary, Orban,” Amandi said, naming the European country’s leader, Viktor Orban.

The strategist pointed to the fact that Hungary hosted a CPAC event this year, which Orban spoke at, and claimed that “in Ron DeSantis they are trying to establish this type of authoritarian leader who will eventually run for the Presidency of the United States”.

“Absolutely,” Reid replied, then passed the mic to Obeidallah to comment on how the GOP is using Florida as a model for its nationwide management plans.

Adding to the drama of the conversation, Obeidallah said, “We’re going to see freedom-seeking refugees from Florida coming to New York. And you’re welcome here, we’d love to have you here in our state.”

“Look, they’re doing a DeSantistan,” Obeidallah joked, adding, “It’s going to be the worst Disney ride ever where he’s running it. He banned books, banned black history, banned saying the word gay, bans hormone therapy for transgender teens Which is just cruelty.

“Studies have shown that transgender teenagers, who receive hormone therapy, are 40% less likely to commit suicide or attempt suicide. He knows it. He doesn’t care. It’s cruelty”, he asserted. “It’s the idea – like Trump – the idea, to go after those who are vulnerable instead of helping them.”

Obeidallah then accused the GOP base of not being pro-life, “The base – which talks about being pro-life – doesn’t care about the sanctity of life. They don’t care about children. They don’t don’t care about people in need.”

The MSNBC contributor concluded his rant by equating DeSantis and the Republicans with the KKK, saying, “I’m worried. I’m watching Florida. I’m watching Ron DeSantis being groomed to be the next great national GOP magician. We should all be alarmed that, [he’s] try to do in Florida, nationwide. Very alarming.”

“100%,” Reid replied.
