Florida prepares for near-total abortion ban to take effect

Clinics, patients and abortion rights activists in Florida are bracing for the impact of a new law that will overnight transform the state from one with the fewest restrictions on the procedure in the South to a place where it will be practically prohibited.

The six-week abortion law, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis last year and upheld by the Florida Supreme Court earlier this month, takes effect Wednesday. In the days leading up to the ban, clinics experienced a surge in demand. Meanwhile, advocates began mailing out how to access abortion pills.
