Florida passes shields for babies unborn at 15 weeks

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (right) signed legislation Thursday to protect unborn babies in the Sunshine State, banning abortions after 15 weeks.

Speaking from Nacion de Fe in Kissimmee, Florida, the governor made clear that he is committed to “standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.”

“We’re here to protect life,” DeSantis said, announcing his intention to sign HB 5.

“It’s a time when these babies have their hearts racing. They can move, they can taste, they can see, they can feel pain, they can suck their thumbs, and they have brainwaves,” DeSantis said. , noting that this movement represents “the most important protections for life that have been enacted in this state in a generation.”

He briefly touched on the radical opinions of the extreme left, which try to normalize abortion even up to nine months:

And if you look at what’s going on in certain segments of our society, especially among people who are affiliated with the far left of our political spectrum, of course it’s overrepresented in places like Hollywood, in the media and obviously in one of our major political parties, but they are now taking the position that babies can be aborted until the ninth month. Literally you can go back, for you parents, and these are some of the most important experiences of my life to hold your child for the very first time. What they would say is a parent is holding that child, if you just come back for a day or two you could have turned the child off completely?

“It’s fundamentally wrong. It’s infanticide, and it has no place,” DeSantis said, noting that the mentality has “really shocked the conscience in our society” and mentioning the horrific story of life activists unearth the remains of 115 aborted babies in Washington, DC.

“They found all these baby remains and they found five that were basically premature babies. They would have been, but they could have survived, you know, outside the womb. And yet Washington DC treats this like we would treat our lunch trash or something,” he said.

“It’s truly horrific to see this could happen in our country, but particularly in our nation’s capital, and so it’s ruthless. It’s untrue,” DeSantis continued, making it clear that “we won’t let that happen.” produce in the State of Florida.

The bill itself, DeSantis explained, “will provide protections to unborn children from abortion when the child reaches 15 weeks of gestational age.”

“Of course these are babies that have heartbeats and can feel pain and can move as we said the bill also expands fetal infant death review boards across the ‘State who engage health professionals and communities to review child mortality cases and recommend reduction efforts tailored to their communities,’ he said, noting that this also ‘requires that hospitals with services Labor delivery programs participate in Florida, Quality Collaborative prenatal initiatives that range from opioid recovery programs to reducing the overuse of C-sections in childbirth”.

“This requirement will move Florida to a statewide standard for quality childbirth services and evidence-based interventions for issues such as opioid abuse that lead to higher rates infant mortality,” he added.
