Florida mom thanks deputy who climbed burning building to save 2-year-old daughter from fire

A Florida mum has thanked the quick-thinking deputy who climbed out of a three-story building to save her two-year-old daughter during a fire this weekend.

Barbara Elemus and her daughter Sophia met with Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy William Puzynski on Tuesday and thanked him for his heroic actions, FOX35 Orlando reported.

“I want him so badly because without him my daughter and I might not be here,” Elemus told the station. “And my sister might not be here. He showed my kids something positive that he was willing to risk his own life and fall down three floors just to save us.”

The sheriff’s office posted photos of the reunion between Elemus, his children and Orange County deputies on his Facebook page.

“It was a joyous reunion, with tears, hugs and laughter – and lots of toys and supplies for mom and kids!” wrote the sheriff’s office.

Orange County sheriff’s deputies responded early Saturday morning to the Isles at East Millenia apartments in Orlando after part of the complex caught fire, the sheriff’s office previously said.

Puzynski’s body camera shows him scaling the second floor balcony and the mother hands him her daughter from the upper floor. Puzynski then lowers the baby to other deputies on the ground.

Three residents were injured in the blaze, according to firefighters. The sheriff’s office said there were no casualties and no deputies were injured.

Firefighters said the blaze directly affected 12 units at the Isles at East Millenia apartments in Orlando and affected 24 units in total.

Elemus told the station that she and her four children were staying at a hotel in Orlando after losing everything in the fire.

To help the family during their move, the station reported that the sheriff’s office gave her children toys, gift cards and clothing.
