Florida man posing as taxi driver rapes female passenger: report

A Florida man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a rideshare driver and raping a passenger he picked up at Miami International Airport last month, according to a report.

The 28-year-old victim had just arrived from Salt Lake City and was looking for a cab when Fernando Avila Hernandez, posing as an Uber driver, offered to drive her to her hotel, NBC Miami reported Thursday.

At some point during the ride, Hernandez, 28, asked if she wanted to sit in the front seat to help her navigate.

The woman – originally from Colombia – agreed to the seat change because she was unfamiliar with how Ubers operated, NBC reported.

“She said she didn’t think about it because Uber is not officially licensed in Colombia, Uber drivers sit their passengers in the front so as not to alert authorities,” an affidavit said. on the deal, depending on the outlet.

As they approached her hotel, she offered to pay by credit card – but Hernandez said he only accepts cash, according to the report.

He then allegedly offered her $500 for sex and she refused, telling him she was not a sex worker.

Hernandez, from Miami, then allegedly demanded $300 for the ride and the passenger said she did not have that amount on her.

He drove her to a parking lot behind a nearby restaurant and sexually assaulted her, authorities say.

Hernandez then dropped the woman off at a hotel where she alerted staff to the alleged attack.

The suspect was later arrested after cops reviewed surveillance footage and recognized him from an unrelated incident.

Uber told NBC that Hernandez hasn’t worked for them since 2021 and isn’t allowed to pick up fares.

Hernandez is now facing multiple sex raps. His attorney, Bijan Sebastian Parwaresch, told NBC his client was innocent.

“We strongly oppose the notion of a non-consensual sexual encounter,” he said.

Earlier this month, a serial rapist who posed as an Uber driver to lure women to Ohio was sentenced to at least 41 years in prison. Christian Burks raped five women in Cleveland between October 2017 and May 2020. He posed as an Uber driver in two of those cases, according to Cleveland.com.
